Buying Organic Versus Non Organic

Time To Start Buying Organic?

It is April 14Th and a rainy Tuesday morning here in central Florida. This past weekend Stephen C. Sharp was questioned by some family members on the reason why he always opts for organic versus conventionally grown fruits, meats, and fish if nothing else. For all the new food and health conscious people out there as well as the veterans Stephen gives his list of the most essential foods to purchase in organic form rather than conventional supermarket style.Starting with the fruits, well lets just say paying a few extra cents for organic fruits such as oranges, apples, and peaches is well worth it. Organic certified fruits are grown without any dangerous pesticides and fertilizers which makes them many times more nutritious and healthy to consume. Non organic fruits tend to be one of the foods that contain more pesticides than other food crops. These higher levels of pesticides linger on the fruits and seep into the fruit. Even after washing your fruits extensively the pesticides will still be present in the fruit. If you still decide to eat conventional fruits remember to stay away from the last 1/4 of the fruit’s inside edible area. Studies have shown this is the part of the fruit that is highest in pesticides and contaminants. So this is why Stephen always chooses organic fruits for his family and friends. The second food group that Stephen always purchases organic is meats. Very simply stated meats that are organic certified come from animals that eat foods with absolutely no by-products, synthetic growth hormones, antibiotics, and other harmful chemicals. These animals are usually allowed to graze and eat fresh grass as part of their diet. The farms they are raised on contain fresh earth and the end result by far outweighs the potential risks of the cheaper non-organic meat. While organic meat is by far more expensive a simple reduction in the amount of meat we eat per week can easily balance out the extra cost. Buy you meat organic and smile more! The third item on Stephen’s list is fish. While it is very hard to classify any ocean free fish as organic, as they may swim thousands of miles of ocean and eat smaller fish which are obviously not organic, the one important factor here is wild caught. Stephen has done much research on the health concerns with regard to farm raised fish versus wild caught fish. Stephen chooses wild caught fish hands down for his family and friends. The whole concept of raising fish via farm is great but much work needs to be done to make these fish less harmful and chemical free. Farm raised fish ponds are treated with dangerous pesticides to prevent the fish from getting lice. They also are fed food pellets that contain artificial colors. Binders, which hold the food pellet together are also used. These pellets may contain other fish and animal parts as well as other artificial flavors. The other worrisome topic with seafood is the PCB/Mercury contents in fish. Stephen limits his weekly intake of seafood to not more than one pound total per week. He only buys fish that are lowest in mercury levels such as haddock, tilapia, sardines, and anchovies. He does though enjoy an occasional can of white albacore tuna packed in spring water maybe twice per month. He always cooks his fish well to remove any PC B’s present and will turn down raw fish such as sushi almost every time.We hope this guide will help get you and your loved ones on the right track to choosing and eating healthy. The benefits of the above mentioned foods in organic form far outweigh the potential health hazards with prolonged consumption of those foods not classified as organic and wild caught. Have a healthy and happy Tuesday.

Solar Energy for DIY Enthusiasts

Due to the ever diminishing energy sources it is time now to approach the most under estimated cheaper energy sources
that are abundantly available around the world. Devastaing impact on the environment can be limited by using the resource that the sun radiates. We have not yet taken up on the investment of building solar energy units at home because of the outlay and inconvenience.. It’s much easier and cheaper than you may believe possible to benefit from solar power – and easy to install. By using solar energy you will be withdrawing your energy consumption away from the already exhausting regular supplies and towards the more natural energy generated by the sun, and saving yourself from paying a monthly bill in the long term.

Let’s now take a look at some of the options that are available to take advantage of solar power in your home.

If you are an expert in cooking then you can definitely take advantage of the free energy solar cooker. The convenient box-like utensil is sufficient for you to prepare a meal for a family of five. Don’t think that your credibility as a cook will suffer. You will still be able to either bake, boil or roast. Don’t forget that you should plan to start your cooking a little sooner as it does take a little longer to cook. However, this is lesser in importance compared with the ever-increasing power costs. This is a free source of fuel.

A solar lighting system is easlily installed in your dwelling. The energy required can be converted from the sun using solar panels and is sufficient to power the whole thing. Solar energy is stored in the cells allowing you to remain with a functioning lighting system at night also. The great thing is that with this system in place you will never have to pay a lighting bill again.

If you Want to Continue Driving then Stop Littering

For so long masses have been dropping litter from their vehicles, whether it’s a crisp parcel or sandwich pack people have literally been littering the roads for decades. Statistics have show that just under 700k bags of rubbish have been collected from the English roads everyday.

But a lot of stuff could soon be changing as campaigners are trying to introduce a points system for anyone caught littering.

Have you ever been driving on the road when suddenly the passenger infront of you opens there window and chuck all the rubbish out. Not only is this environmentally harmful but it is potentially life threatening and dangerous for drivers. suppose you were driving a long at 70mph and abruptly an apple core or something else hits your windshield. That windscreen will probably end up smashing on you.

therefore what is literally going to occur is that you are in reality going to lose control of the vehicle and cause a major accident. I personally believe that points and a fine will help in controlling this. Members of the public are actually being asked to report any incidents that they notice of people throwing litter.

By the close of the twelvemonth period if there is enough people complaining about the intensity of litter being hit on the roads then the new law could in effect come into effect. There is actually no excuse for people throwing out their litter, instead keep it in the car until you find a bin.

A View on Growing Things Organically

until discoveries were made during the administering of bomb production and subsequent

dropping of said bombs on innocent peoples heads.

Back in the late 60’s early 70’s, when growing things naturally started

to attract a

ground-swell of interest and was subsequently given the title of

‘organic gardening’

(previously known as plain old ‘gardening’); there was a knee-jerk

reaction by people who could not quite grasp the idea (amazing, isn’t

it?) – that led to the rather erroneous belief that in order to be an

‘organic grower’, one had to dance around naked under a full moon,

replete with tamborines, candles, chanting and flowers in the hair, in

order to understand this mysterious ‘organic’ mumbo-jumbo.

Room was even made for articles in popular magazines, albeit

tongue-in-cheek, about this new ‘hippy hobby’. Even today, in these

supposedly enlightened years, there are many who just don’t trust all

that hippy-shit.

The general belief being, that if produce is not enormous, shiny, not a

mark on it, and under vision altering lights – surely it just cannot be

all that good.

There is not much variety with organic produce, either! It’s always

lots of cabbages and daikons, then in summer, you just cannot see over

the piles of tomatoes and beans.

The concept of seasonal produce will never catch on.

Modern consumers are too used to getting whatever they want, whenever they want it.

Let us not forget, either, that organic produce is more expensive to buy.

Yes…. it costs more, it’s smaller – and well, just doesn’t look as good, does it?

Then things get really tricky, if, as is fairly common knowledge,

supermarket produce

gets more and more expensive, due to the expense of increased use of

fertilisers,

insecticides, chemicals in general and freight costs; why then is

organic produce STILL more expensive if they don’t use those things?

The cost of water goes up every quarter, but organic growers use lots

and lots of mulch, ground covers and the like, using less water, so

THAT can’t be it.

Well, sorry folks, it’s just greed. The prospect of money to be made always gets in the road.

Organic growers used to be little hobby farmers, pooling their wares,

or selling out of road-side honesty stalls. Then organics went legit,

became corporate and the fix was in – here there be money!

In the early days of organic growing legitimacy there were governing

organisations to oversee the industry’s practices, and of course to

keep all the cheats in check. Well, if it has been ‘grown’ you cannot

deny that it is organic, a block of wood is organic, so, grave fears

were held that the market would be infiltrated by cheats and

non-believers.

An Organic certification process was instigated and in order to get top

dollar for organically grown produce – one had to become ‘certified’.

But due to the fact that most administrative type people, might be a

bit pressed to tell the

difference between organic or not, the fledgling industry was run by

organic growers themselves. Or by people who had ‘dabbled’ in organic

growing (or failed), at the very least they had some knowledge about

it, albiet a pretty laid-back attitude.

This led to numerous problems, the most interesting being the ‘true believer syndrome’.

A certified grower would periodically be inspected by a representative of an organic

regulatory body, who in theory would then go around your farm and check that everything was kosher.

Balanced, integrated farming practices and no hidden bags of ’super’, flyspray, etc.

But the ‘true believers’ had the attitude of “we’re all in the same club, we ALL believe,

there could not possibly be any cheating”

This idea that all organic growers were of the same mind and could not possibly tarnish

the pristine ideals of harmonious, organic growing (and doing the world a big favour

at the same time) – was just astounding!

These certified organic organisation inspectors had to be forced to

actually have a close look! It was practically impossible to get one to

pull up a plant and inspect the root formation, or fish around in your

liquid fertiliser tank (god forbid actually ‘testing’ something).

The attitude was one of “your an organic grower, YOU’RE alright” coupled with “it’s your

patch, so I am not going in there without your express permission”.

True believers, organic warriors, brothers in the cause, mates – not to be doubted.

Due to the ludicrous nature of the industry in it’s formative years, and money already having

been invested in regulatory organisations, something had to be done and it was mostly taken over by large corporations.

These guys regulate prices, they want a significant return. They don’t actually care

about the blood sweat and tears involved, nor snap frosts. It’s all about the bottom line.

Organic produce had come of age.

The English Go a Little Crazy After Record Temperatures in UK

British Heatwave Report - Youtube

People in Britain got a welcome break from their usual rain and misery recently when a heatwave broke out across the country. During the end of June and beginning of July temperatures rocketed to a whopping 35 Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit), the hottest in three years.  It was also the hottest temperature in June for decades – the average for June is 19-22 degrees Celcius (around 70 degrees Fahrenheit).

But when a population starved of warmth and sunshine are given it all in one go, crazy things start to happen.

Sunburn City

First thing you see when the sun comes out in the UK is people stripping down to bikinis to make the most of the sun.  Any English town or city on a hot day will be littered with bodies lying around trying to get as much sun on as much of their pale flesh as possible.  Several months down the line you can be sure of a few melanoma scares resulting from the overexuberant sun-worshipping.

The Grumbling Begins

True to form, the British mentality can’t deal with simply being happy and counting there blessings for more than a few days. Sure enough we soon started hearing people grumbling about it being too hot, and wishing for some cooler weather or even some rain. And, inevitably, there were petitions to demand the government do something about the awful hot weather and lack of air conditioners in public places!

Cooling Down

With half of the British population is getting into their beach wear and throwing themselves on deckchairs directly under the sun, the rest rushes down to the high street and sucks up the entire stock of desk fans like some sweaty, many-headed monster. According to Google, searches for the term “portable air conditioner” in the UK went from 9,900 in May to 49,500 in June!

Nothing Lasts Forever

However these kinds of weather conditions are doomed to die out in the UK, and a week later the country was swept with heavy wind and rain.Climate change campaigners are saying this is exactly the kind of effects they have been warning about for so long.  Predictably, everyone is now moaning and complaining about the wind and rain, and wishing the heatwave would come back. I suppose you just cannot win.
