Save The Earth, Bicycle To Work

More and more people are becoming conscious of the cost of fuel used for commuting. This has caused many people to move closer to their work to cut back the cost of fuel. If you would like to save even more money on fuel, consider biking to work. By biking on the nice days to work, you can enjoy the ride and save a considerable amount of money on fuel needed to commute from home to work and back.

Many people find that biking to work is a great way to get exercise. It not only saves them the cost of fuel, it saves a gym membership. In addition, bikers rarely face problems with traffic jams. They usually can easily maneuver through traffic and may arrive as quickly as car commuters.

Most city buses are now equipped with bicycle racks. You bike to the bus stop. Load your bike onto the rack and at your closest stop remove your bike ride to work.

If you are preparing to bike to work, you will need some supplies to make the commute easier. In order to carry your needed materials by bike, you will want to purchase some messenger bags. These bags were designed for use by bicycle delivery persons in downtown San Francisco, so they will work for your commute. You will especially want to have a laptop messenger bag if you need to transport your computer by bicycle. Choose a waterproof model to keep those delicate electronics dry and to protect your computer from any scrapes on the trip.

You may also want to pick up a few extra messenger bags for the bike. They are nice for spur of the moment purchases such as sale digital cameras or transporting items you will need when you get home such as ATV parts.

As we spend more time on planet earth, we learn that resources are truly limited. The resources that are available are becoming very expensive. We all need to do our own part in conservation of our remaining natural resources for generations that will follow.

Besides conserving resources, biking to work saves money. A commuter that switches two days a week saves 40 percent of his commuting fuel bill. If you bike daily, you can save 100 percent of that fuel bill. If you begin with a used bike, you will have almost no investment in your commute. In addition to saving money, you keep your body in shape.

Chillchase Release New Range of Patio Heaters

Despite winter coming and the weather taking a turn for the worse, we are still trying to get the most out of the nights. Luckily, there has been a brand new range of patio heatershave been released that will improve your outdoor experience.

A UK based heating company, Chillchase, has just released a brand new range of 3 patio heaters. The new 3 are named Neptune, Zeus and Poseidon, each of the models come at different prices and different features.

What makes the Chillchaser patio heaters so special is their amazing style and range of features. This new range of heaters look nothing like any other patio heaters I’ve ever seen. The reason why they can do this is because they don’t use the same method of heating as other patio heaters. Each of the heaters use a new carbon fibre heating system which emits more focused heat and emits absolutely no CO2 gasses. Each of the heating tubes are individually replaceable and offer up to 8,000 hours of heating time.

Other features included in these new patio heaters include an infrared sensor that turns the heater on when movement is detected. All the heaters also come with a tip over feature which turns the heater off if the unit is knocked over.

The cheapest heater out of the 3 is the Neptune. Alongside the features named above, the Neptune heater also comes with a dome light fitted to the top which offers 360 degree lighting. This means that you can keep out of the dark while staying warm. At £299, it’s not a bad price to pay to keep warm and out of the dark.

The middle of the range heater is the Zeus. The Zeus patio heater is very similar to the Neptune because it also has a light fitted to the top of the unit. The only difference is that the Zeus’ light doesn’t provide 360 degree lighting. Carrying a price of £449, I think I’d rather have a Zeus heater.

The third and final, and most expensive heater, is the Poseidon. What makes the Poseidon the most expensive and the coolest is that it has a media player at the top of the unit with a 7 inch screen and built in speakers. Retailing at £849, you’re having to pay alot of cash for the entertainment features.

If only they had an indoor version of these as I would much rather buy one of these than have to buy portable heaters or fan heatersas they are pretty clunky.

Is Bamboo the Most Eco Friendly Material?

Ok, so the Bamboo PC was just an eco promotion. A laptop version of the bamboo PC was released at the Hanover computer fair last March. The laptop features a laminated bamboo casing which surrounds a rather basic computer, that alone won’t make much of a dent in the amount of plastics around the world.

But it was a little demonstration of what can be done, and, if proof of bamboo’s versatility were required, consider it proven.

Bamboo is surely the only plant providing sources of food, building materials and woven fabrics. Even one of Edison’s original light bulbs had a bamboo filament. Due to bamboo being so strong and cheap, it has become a widely used product for scaffolding in parts of Asia. The bamboo fibres have extremely high tension and compression strength. Bamboo has almost the same tensile strength to weight ratio as steel, plus it has roughly twice as muhc compressive strength as concrete. And now there’s a bamboo laptop!

Products made of bamboo ticks most boxes for anyone buying green home furnishings. To start with, it’s hightly sustainable. There are a number of bamboo species that are able to grow over a metre each day. The locals that live near this amazing species of bamboo can cut down as much as they want and still have the same sized fores t at the end of the year as they had at the beginning. On the global warming sides of things, being a plant, any product made from bamboo contains a large amount of atmospheric carbon within it. However, the plastic equivalent to a bamboo products actually adds to the atmospheric carbon levels, rather than taking away!

Another point is that because bamboo is a plant source, there are many variations between two plants, these variations make it a difficult material to use in a mass production process. You can be pretty sure that a craftsman has produced any bamboo item you buy. If you choose to buy from a reputable source, you’ll also have the peace of mind that the craftsman has earned a fair wage from their work and not been exploited. Finally you’ll be sure that the product you buy hasn’t accumulated air miles in its journey from craftsman to your home.

With eco credentials as strong as these it’s amazing that bamboo products can also be very beautiful. Picture a skilfully made bamboo box, lovingly lacquered with 15 layers of natural shellac. All natural, and really lovely. Only the other day, I bought an amazingly crafted bamboo knife block and now I’m considering buying more bamboo kitchen accessories like fruit bowls. Stylish and ethical. Win. ;)

New Greener Cars Are Out All The Time

The Riversimple urban car actually has a very small fuel cell and looks like it is going to be the smallest one to date so far.

The vehicle is no bigger than a Smart car, weighing just 350kg, and has been developed over three years by teams at Oxford and Cranfield universities. It is actually quite a good car for someone living in a city as it can reach a top speed of 50mph which isnt bad for a car of this type.

The power in this car actually comes from a very small 6kw fuel cell which is actually very small compared to the 100kw in the Honda Clarity. it is very important to keep the weight down on this car as it allows the speed of the car to be heavily increased.

There is a bank of ultracapacitors to store this electricity, which in turn provides most of the accelerating power, allowing for a small fuel cell.

The great thing about this design is that it will be placed online making it available for all car manufactuers to use at their own will.

One of the great things is that you can lease this car and the lease will actually cover you for the cost of the fuel too.

Hugo Spowers, head of Riversimple, said: “Cars evolved under very different constraints to those of today, so we must move on. The sale of cars still rewards the maximisation of resource use – whereas we now accept that we must minimize resource use.”

“The Riversimple Urban Car represents a major step towards practical 21st century personal transport and towards the fulfilment of my great-grandfather’s ambitions for accessible personal transport but this time combining his other passions: light weight and high efficiency,” said Piech.

The real question to ask is will they be upgrading things like used cars to make them greener? If you have recently gone out and purchased a  Audi TT Roadster then you are not going to be pleased when you cannot upgrade it to make it a bit greener.  New Audi are just one of the brands that needs to be looked into.
